Alder Bursage Interview

Question: What was your experience during the making of this book?

Answer: Well, obviously you do a lot of research and you prepare yourself, which is actually quite enjoyable. But there always comes that moment that first day of writing when you get on the set and you realize that you said 'yes' to a part that you very well could fail miserably at. Fortunately, though, I had wonderful co-stars; Athel, of course, is a wonderful actress, very experienced; and they helped me realized that I alone wouldn't ruin the franchise. Yes, there was definitely a feeling that if it were to fail that we would all fail together. Now that some time has passed I read the book and I am happy to say that I was very happy to see that I had not gotten in the way of the final product.

Question: Did you enjoy your climatic fight scene against Mandi?

Answer: Yes, it is always fun to have an heroic moment or two. Interestingly enough, the way it played out in the final cut of the book was different from the original outline.

Question: Really?

Answer: Yes, quite. In the outline, Alder was supposed to have a climactic sword fight with Mandi. Very swashbuckling, very elaborate. However, there was an accident and my stunt-double fractured both of his femurs during rehearsals. Well, the insurance investigators shut down the entire production for three days, and when they cleared us, we had to change the ending to something we could shoot quickly and without a stunt-double. To be honest, I much prefer the way it ended up, I felt it was much more true to the character, but it is always fascinating to see the organic process by which stories evolve as they are made.
